Onyxia dropped random BoP epics and always tier 2 helms. Molten Core dropped random BoP epics and tier1 AND tier2. About two or three months down the road they released a few world bosses, or contesteds as we know it which at time time, dropped relatively usefull gear (not as good as tier2 for the most part.) Two months after this BWL came out. They realized the mistake they made with itemization and decided that tier 2 would now drop in BWL. So, say you started raiding from the start, there is a chance that going into BWL , you would already have full tier 2, or close to it. So you generally were raiding for nothing, other than weapons and random assorted jewelery. A few months after this ZG was released which was a 20 man raid which dropped no benefits for MC/BWL geared players for the most part. It was released as a gear up for MC. About 7 months after BWL was released AQ came out, it took about 3 more months to open AQ so about 10 months after BWL you could zone into AQ. AQ had tier2.5 which just about NO classes used, generally warlocks, shamans, used it almost always, sometimes mages. It also dropped random BoP epics but for the most part, no one wanted the gear period. Also the final boss of AQ40, C'thun, was gotten to and was unkillable for nearly 2 months before it was patched and fixed. So no, WoW is not perfect with encounter either. Also Vael was broken for quite sometime in BWL. So if you were a warrior, or a rogue, for instance, you would be wearing tier2 from release, til' fucking Naxxaramas came out. Also, for tanking, Thunderfury (drop off of Ragnaross in MC) is the best tanking weapon until you down Kel'Thuzad and get Unending Hunger or w/e its called. Naxx finally has it right. So while naxx is nice, take a look at the past and how long it took them, and imagine playing this game as we do in EQ2, the top of the game and being able to raid from release. I'll tell you right now I wouldn't be able to do it.
