Re: Vanguard GU 3
Yeah, 18gb... I'm still paying for it actually, was very much enjoying my bard. And was playing it a few days a week until installing RoK fucked up my eq2 and VG installations so now they're permanently both in my documents and settings folder, meaning patching one overwrites the same-named files in each. Tried various things and still no fix. Its like SOE is making it difficult for me to play vanguard on purpose.

Re: Vanguard GU 3
Yeah I have a L50 Halfling Bard. I think everyone agrees that Vanguard's bards are the best, because of how songs are composed. You add each song component to create a full composition, each component includes melodies, rests, etc. The higher level you are, the more components you can add. You can then save a bunch of custom songs for various situations or groups. This is where I love my G15 keyboard, as I can use these keys for activating song hotkeys. Most song hotkeys will be setup with commands to equip or unequip the appropriate weapon and/or instrument.
I also have a L45 Ranger and they are great, arguably the best DPS class. FINALLY Rangers are #1 DPS class, as oppossed to EQ2's terribly underpowered Ranger class. It takes some expensive gear to make an EQ2 Ranger spectacular in combat.

I have to agree. It seems to me that EQ2 uses a similar engine as some 3D character rendering applications use (e.g. Poser). Especially in how shadows are rendered (especially the FPS performance hit from environment shadows rendered in real time).
I do however like the halfling female model. Mine is pretty cute. :P Instead of appearing like dwarves (extremely disproportional head, hands, feet), they made them more like "little girls" lol. And now comes the obligatory "No, that doesn't make me a pedophile", statement. :P There's obviously a distinction between extremely petite girls, with a developed feminine body, and that of an undeveloped girl; child. Duh. :P

Re: Vanguard GU 3
Bard DPS is also pretty good, much, much better than in EQ2 where they are terrible (again, unless you have extremely good raid gear). I can make some great DPS songs to solo stuff, and if anything goes wrong I can run away fast and heal at the same time. It's very rare that I'm ever killed, whereas the other classes I have played die often (druid, wizard, ranger). In fact one thing I disliked about Vanguard is there was too much death, or at least, much more than what I was accustomed to as an EQ2 player.
And unlike EQ2, you have to go find your corpse (tombstone) which is a pain. Unless of course you're a bard who has levitate, invis and can run faster than anyone. :P Bards just make the game easy and fun to play, and eliminate many existing or potential hassles...
I think originally in EQ2 (I began playing a couple of weeks after release), you had to go find your corpse as well until eventually there were places where you could summon your corpse. And then finally that was eliminated altogether. Likewise I think Vanguard will get easier.
There have been a couple of things that have been adopted by EQ2 from VG that I liked, such as resizeable map, and the ability to share quests.
One thing I really like about Vanguard is the loot system. You can set it so it's AUTOMATIC. One of my biggest issues with EQ2 is constantly clicking on loot windows, especially while "2 boxing" in a group. In VG one of the loot options will auto assign loot randomly, and it can be customized up to a specific tier. So for example all common loot will be auto assigned but uncommon, rare, or higher will be rolled on. Or you can set it so all loot will be auto assigned no matter what.
Also there's the LFG system. The best feature of this is the ability to list quests you are working on and want to get help with. Imagine how much of a benefit this would be with Kunark !!!
And of course there are the player made houses, player made boats, and flying mounts. Oh and levitate which will never be in EQ2. The game's got plenty of appeal, it's just a shame I can't really dedicate myself to it and EQ2 at the same time.

Re: Vanguard GU 3
I don't think anyone would argue that Vanguard has some really fun classes, but the game itself sucked and no matter how good the classes were that's not gunna save it. In fact, Vanguard has the only healer class that I have ever enjoyed playing, the Disciple.

Re: Vanguard GU 3
That doesn't mean much to be honest. The official vg forums are greatly different than the official eq2 forums.

I loved my monk. (which was pretty much a Disciple that could not heal) Balancing my Gin (or Jin idk atm) and energy was awesome. So were the chain event things. Just wish they would not have rushed it, game would have been great.

Re: Vanguard GU 3
The game is still early in development, and if it follows EQ2 in terms of development then it will be a lot of fun in another 2 years.

The chain events are crit chains. Spell crits activate it for spell casters and melee crits activate it for melee classes. My bard for example has 5, 3 are melee orientated and 2 others include a spell crit debuff (makes mob more vulnerable to spell crits). This makes combat a little less monotonous and more random, although with a Dread Knight in the group I tend to crit a lot with their crit buff on mobs (anytime a particular mob is hit, there's a greater chance to crit). Also, when the mob is around 25% or so health I have noticed the crit rate goes through the roof and I'm using a crit chain almost every fight at that point.
I really like how they gave every class something powerful and makes them attractive to any group. Even healers can solo well, probably easier than in EQ2.
The only class that seems less than what it should be is Druid, IMO. They only seem to be really attractive in a group around L50, where they have limited crowd control (on a very long recast timer), and offer decent and unique buffs. But they're not really a good healing class (tons of energy to provide small heals) or a good DPS class. The only thing they really excel at is soloing 4 or 5 dot mobs, as they can do it much easier than anyone else using DoT's and root/snare. I'd really like to see them either have a more powerful group buff, or improve their pet damage. One of the unique things they have is an elemental pet, but the damage it deals is feeble. Like an SK's pet in EQ2.
