Star Wars Galaxies R.I.P. , Possible hope for Star Wars Fans
A source close to BioWare confirmed to us today that the studio’s upcoming untitled massively-multiplayer online RPG will be centered around the Star Wars universe, specifically that of Knights of the Old Republic, which the developer released in 2003. The game garnered critical acclaim and spawned a less-popular sequel, released by Obsidian two years later.
The game is being developed by the company’s Austin studio, formed in 2006 and headed by BioWare Creative Director James Ohlen, whose past credits include the first KOTOR, Neverwinter Nights, and Baldur Gate’s I and II.
This is not the first Star Wars-related MMORPG: Star Wars Galaxies debuted in the summer of 2003, followed by several expansions. It was generally well-received by fans and critics, but subscriber numbers plunged and never recovered after a controversial gameplay update in 2005. It’s estimated that the game now has fewer than 100,000 subscribers and less than 20,000 active players.
It’s currently unknown whether or not EA, which acquired BioWare last week, will act as publisher for this title, or if the studio had a previous arrangement with another publisher.
Expect the game sometime in 2009.
If this is true, and if it's of the same caliber as the KOTOR series i'd definately trash bin eq2 to play a non soe product based off the Star Wars universe. I believe most swg refugees would agree.
BTW soe if you're reading this, the actions taken in swg with not listening to the player base, ball faced lying, ninja nerfing, and the total craptastic nge, i have a few things i want off my chest since i got banned from the swg forums. Dry your fucking mom, and congratulations on being the most controversial mmo ever created, and i don't mean in a good way.

Interesting never been a fan of most star wars games but i loved the 2 KOTOR games (shame they ditched the 3rd installment). Great story line and pretty funny too HK47 is just hilarious. So if they did do it then i'd give it a go after all they have a free rein on what to do with it being set 100,000 years before the first start wars film.

It's true, and pretty much the best news I could have heard at any point in time, short of winning the lottery or Jessica Biel showing up to my house with a bottle of baby oil and handcuffs.

Re: Star Wars Galaxies R.I.P. , Possible hope for Star Wars Fans
Was SWG generally well received by fans and critics? I seem to recall it being an unplayable sack of shit at launch with entire professions that never had any purpose for years (until they were literally removed), enormous bland worlds, massive cheese template stacking for almost unbeatable PvP/PvE characters, dungeons balanced against these two or three massively cheesy template stacks, crafted armor and buffs that pretty much broke the game and were acknowledged by devs as being far above what they intended but were not fixed for over a year, zero content except that created by players, and no tools for players to really create content until after its slow, suffocating death. Oh, and no space or even ground vehicles at launch... umm, what else, the superiority of kung fu to almost any sort of gun, the superiority of chemists throwing poison to anything else, everyone walking around in giant tin can robot suits because that was the best armor in every single possible way by a mile.
Its saving grace was that it was Star Wars and the base engine allowed for a lot of freedom. It's a testament to how much people wanted something different that even that many people stuck with it. Then they decided to rip out the heart of the game and make it into Everquest in Space without the interesting parts of Everquest. If they had just abandoned the idea of interesting PvE and focused entirely on expanding player options and making PvP worthwhile, I think they could've had an incredible winner.
This one might be pretty good, dunno, although I wish it could be focused more around smugglers and bounty hunters and blasters instead of jedi. I guess we'll have to wait for the Firefly MMO (is that still happening?) for our potential Han Solo fix :P
