Edit: I do not give a shit how much anyone on here knows. I know raiding, but apart from that, I never really played around with it. I openly said that when I first started askign questions. So, here's what you do.
Target the mob. You should see it is targeting the tank. Then, use ruse. If the mob is on you, good job, you'll be back up in no time, fighting again.
If, however, the mob is still targetting the main tank, what does that mean?

Yes, you're right! The mob is not on you! So click ruse again. What this will do is make you cancel the ability, it's pretty cool, right? So click ruse that second time, and you can continue fighting. If you practice this and get good at it, you'll see no loss to your dps.
