Default Deflection vs Defense

Ok, stupid question, but if you have two basically identical items one with +deflection on it and one with + defense on it, which would you choose as a bruiser.

As a note I don't expect to tank raids (laugh) but tank pretty much any heroic thing I can get my hands on. So which keeps me alive longer?

as long as its not epic or 65^^^
Deflection
If its orange or epic id go with defense as we wont avoid it anyway lol

but it depends on your current setup and solo or group but id use Deflection, but that might just be me

It depends on how far you are up the curve. A simple way to test to put each of the items on and check your avoidance. Granted if one has higher agi that will come into play but you are looking for max avoidance anyways.

Let me throw a cogturner in your statement - What if on the 100% impossible situation you were tanking an epic mob, which we all KNOW the avoidance is screwy on it. Would defense matter more then deflection to an epic?

No. Parry would be the only one I would consider more beneficial if you have retribution of stone because riposte is 25% chance of a successful parry.

I think it depends on how they implement avoidance with mob to-hit bonuses and the uncontested deflection.

Assuming that the uncontested deflection of defensive stance works by increasing your deflection chance to 16% if your modified deflection rate is less than 16%, then you're probably better off with defense if the mob has a large to hit bonus from their melee skillz. If the mob has say a +25% chance to hit and that puts your deflection under the 16% minimum, then you will indeed get more benefit from boosting your dodge since you get 0 gain from deflection.

The 16% from defensive stance has nothing to do with your deflection skill. It is our only form of uncontested avoidance. Any skill mods avoidance is based off your current avoidance curve.
