i was fortunate enough to inherit a lvl 70 bruiser from a friend. he did no equip the weapon slots, but said something about weaps putting out more dps after the tso expansion.

i do not plan to do the epic weapon quest.

should i look to equip weapons, or stay barehand?

if weaps, any suggestions for which are best?

screw barehand, its pointless and severly lowers dps output. For the time being by two mastercrafted fists or batons from the broker. Do not get a 2hander. Upgrade those weapons asap from instances, id highly suggest you do the epic, most of it can be done solo anyway. Also are you sure he has no weapons? Inventory/bank/house? Kinda dumb not to have weapons if the rest of the slots are equipped.

Bare Hands were somewhat popular before TSO because our STR lines required bare fists and gave some special benefits, but that is not the case any longer. Get weapons. theres no excuse for going barehanded now.
