    Default The New Cabalist

TL;DR: The new Cabalist is the shit.

So, Trion designed the Cabalist as the Cleric AoE spell damage soul. Previous to Beta 5, they used these things called "Sigils" that would be placed on enemies. After a certain amount of time or if the target took a certain amount of damage, the Sigil would detonate doing AoE damage. This was highly efficient in groups, but for soloing... the Cabalist wasn't a great choice.

The new patch changed everything. Now, Cabalists hit even harder and have some serious soloing power.

The old "Sigil" system has been removed for the most part and replaced with a "Lurking Decay" system. ("Sigils" still exist but I'll get to that later.) As a Cabalist, you now get a new ability called "Decay," which is a channeled ability that does damage as long as you channel. It does great damage, and does not suffer from pushback. Which means that if you start casting Decay, you're gonna get the full damage from it no matter what.

Oh yeah, it doesn't have a cooldown either. Which means you can spam it for massive damage.

On top of that, for every second you channel "Decay," you get a stack of a buff called "Lurking Decay." (Maximum 3 stacks.) When you use an ability that consumes these stacks of "Lurking Decay," you'll do AoE damage around the target you consume them on.

The first ability you get that consumes "Lurking Decay" stacks is called "Obliterate." You can only use it when you have at least one stack of "Lurking Decay," but it deals moderate damage in addition to consuming all of your "Lurking Decay" stacks. In Layman's terms, that's one part moderate single-target damage and three parts AoE-damage.

Oh, and if that wasn't enough, "Obliterate" causes the AoE damage from your "Lurking Decays" to be doubled. At level 25, I can do over 500 damage to up to seven enemies with a single instant-cast click. It's pretty awesome.

There's another skill you get called "Tyranny" that you can use to detonate "Lurking Decays." It only consumes one instead of all of them, so you can use it three times consecutively if you have three "Lurking Decay" stacks. "Tyranny" lets you throw a massive AoE bomb on an area, and anything inside the area gets raped. "Tyranny" doesn't have a cooldown, so as long as you keep your "Lurking Decay" stacks up, you can AoE rape when "Obliterate" is on cooldown.

Now, back to Sigils. Sigils have been transformed into a single-target buff for you that, when detonated, has some kind of effect. The first Sigil you get is "Sigil of Power." You cast it on yourself, and then when you use "Obliterate," "Tyranny," or any of those other spells, your "Sigil of Power" will detonate, giving you mana back for every enemy you hit or for every stack of "Lurking Decay" you consume simultaneously. (Whichever is greater.) There are also Sigils that snare, heal, etc.

This might seem like a lot to remember, but basically, when playing a Cabalist, your spell order is:

    Single-Target:
    1. Use a Sigil
    2. Decay
    3. Obliterate (Repeat)

    AoE
    1. Use a Sigil
    2. Decay
    3. Obliterate
    4. Decay
    5. Tyranny (Repeat 4 & 5 until Obliterate comes off cooldown)

It's really that easy. I see the Cabalist getting a few small nerfs in the future, considering how awesome it is now, but I think it's easily your best choice for AoE DPS on a Cleric. (Excluding the Inquisitor's Soul Drain.)

The only class I've seen that can do more AoE DPS is Sab, though I haven't seen most of the Warriors and Mages.

at low 20s as the tank I was putting out between 100-150 DPS in AoE fights...while the cab was consistently doing 150-250 DPS.

Excellent post. I normally play a different spec (Shaman/Justicar/Sentinel) but also have a Cabalist/Inquisitor/Purifier spec. I'll check out the changes tonight!

Thanks again for the simple and understandable walkthrough.

You're welcome! It confused me at first, which is why I typed this up. =P

And yeah, Cabalist/Inquis/Purifier is an amazing combo, just make sure you've got 18 points in Inquis so you can get the massive Death resistance debuff. =)

Damn I should have switched to my Cab/Inquis/Purifier role this beta, but I only stuck to my Shaman/Justicar/Warden. I will try it next beta for sure. Those are basically the 2 combos I came up with for PvP/Dps with good self healing/warding and ability to tank.. Think I will switch warden to purifier though, Purifier is beast for self heal/ward with minimal points(4)
