I think the coercers pushing for everyone to assist through the MT are the ones causing themselves their own grief.

As a tank, I like to be able to make sure that every mob is aware of me. My shadowknight has two taunts that I can use that do no damage (the encounter taunt, and the splitpaw taunt), as well as a couple debuffs that I can use without breaking mez.

However, if people are assisting through me, when I go to taunt that mob that's a step away from my healer, someone else is going to be breaking the mez.

I remember a while ago when I first started playing (LU23 or something, then didn't come back until after ROK), there was still a strong use of MA's even in pugs. It seems now though that people have gotten lazy for the most part and don't even think about things like assisting.

But really that's what you should be pushing for, an MA - preferably your biggest single target damage dealer is the person who everyone is going to assist through - not the MT. A proper tank will be changing targets throughout the encounter to make sure everyone of them is on them, and not on a squishy or a healer.

I prefer /assist to "assisting" thru me so that I can taunt off adds. Remember, not every enchanter is a good enchanter, so (unless I'm told otherwise) I err on the side of caution. Divine Aura isn't gonna work on most epic encounters, so why not pull some adds and put it to good use?

As someone who plays a coercer and a SK wo duos with a coercer i can honestly say my friend does scold me for changing targets for hate. And it is extreamly hard for a tank to resist this reflex thought of OMG ADD TAUNT IT!

Just understand like others have said here chanters are rare, most tanks are not used to ignoring the OMGZ ADDS complex and going tab crazy. And at the same time there are bad coercers out there too who never use mez, so at first the tank must understand your abilitys. Im you prove you are compitent he will place more faith in you.

There are good coercers out there who don't mez either - I just like to know which it is gonna be, especially if they're gonna give me shit for taunting adds when they've been less than extraordinary at locking them down on previous encounters.

There is a very simple solution to this, at least for me. I don't do pick up groups or pick up raids. The Fighters that we have in the guild all prefer different tactics. The Guardian is more then happy to stay on one target and let me mezz to my hearts content. The Zerker though wants to AoE everything, so no mezzing, just stunning. The Pally is good for mezzing, and on the rare occasion that one of the useless bastards above if fucking off somewhere and not logged on, the Monk prefers stuns over mezzing. For me it was a simple enough thing to work with a few tanks and learn what works best for each. No big deal for me. I can adjust. The important factor here is that we are both on vent and can easily communicate when something goes wrong. Like a mezz was resisted and the add is beating the crap out of a healer. I find that some pick up groups are just too frustrating and the lack of quick communications is a big part of that.

Its all about communication, man. Work it out ahead of time, just like loot rights. I always say "Let me know if you don't want me to mez. I plan on slacking until your health dips orange and then I'll start playing the sandman"

I normally get "Whatever makes you happy".

Personally if I am gonna mez, witch is only if the group cant handle what is coming (I.E. tank does not know how to pick up adds so healers die or the healers don't know how to keep tank up) I find that it is extremely important to be more aware of the encounter than the tank is if there are adds you better know they are there b4 tank does and get them locked down. If that still does not work than you are probably in the wrong group.
