Default Domination and Possess Essence

I'm dusting off my 70 coercer for the first time since last summer, and I'm a bit confused. When is Domination used now if you're controlling a pet full time with PE? Can we have 2 pets? Can we choose to charm a higher level pet with the Domination line over PE? Sorry for the noobish question; it's been quite a while and I couldn't find the answer in search.

Thanks to Revel and Jibo especially, tho, for all the great FACQ-type threads which have helped my return immensely.

Charmed pets hit harder and stay their current level. PE pets don't break and become your level. You can only have one pet at a time since they require 3 conc slots.

The possession-type pet is very weak, no matter what the base mob is. It is normalized to around 250-350 dps at level 80. On the other hand, a charmed pet's strength still varies largely based on its type, and a level 77 pet can do 550-650, while a level 80+ charmed pet is capable of more, if you select wisely. Since both pets require 3 conc, charm should be your first choice in most situations.

The only benefit to possession is that it never breaks, has an infinite duration, and can be easily dismissed. Also, you don't have to "take" the mob, but that's a negative in some situations.

Thanks much, guys. I was figuring something like this but wanted to make sure. Can't wait to see what this lil guy can do now.

It's the closest thing to Dire Charm we'll get. Handy if you are doing stupid quests and/or are afking on and off. Don't have to worry about it breaking plus you still get your reactives triggering of it.

Charm is still much better.

Also, it seems the essences have a set combat skill repertoire, so I haven't found any differnece in the types of mobs I get the essence from.

Different Essences definitely have different skill sets. For pure easy mode levelling I'd recommend:

1. Possess a druid mob. They nuke (pitifully), attack pretty much like any other posessed pet, and self heal significantly.

2. Put a link on yourself. Then when root breaks, you will take maybe 2 hits before it bounces back to the pet. Yeah the pet won't "hold" aggro, but with a little dispersion gear you should be fine.

This won't work for farming hard stuff, but for just poking around on solo quests or farming the single up named in JW, it'd be pretty nice.

I honestly don't see myself ever using Possess Essence in a raid or solo situation. I may use it in a group, but that's about it. I have other things I could use my concentration slots for during a raid that would benefit everyone much more than a pet who hits for a few hundred damage. As for soloing, I'll still use Domination and tear through mobs so really its uses will be limited, at least for me.

Worth noting, is that any buffs on any "possessed essences" also scale to 80 along with the actual level of the pet. Take the sirens off coldwind beach in southern TS as an example - if you "possess" one of those, you pick up a permanent group buff called "Dirge Songs" - that, when scaled up to 80, provides the group with 106 str, 106agi, 35 dps mod, 60 parry, and a 12% proc on successful attack to deal 600-900(ish) damage. Tested it and all attributes listed in this buff are applied at the scaled level for the full amount (including the damage proc).

I presume that this buff will stack with normal dirge buffs being a different line - though I did not test it.

So, yes there could be some potential benefits along these lines for using certain pets in raid situations (and consuming 3 conc slots). I could see a "fix" being made to this, as it could be considered overpowered with certain buffs.
