Actually I think this counts for all/most spells. The exception is you can only finish casting the spell on the mob/person at 1.5x (er something like that) the actual range of the spell. So if it wanders TOO far then it won't work but the range is atleast flexable.
I agree that the casting time feels like forever but if I remember correctly, its the same for all pet summoning cast times. Summoner pets, Shaman Dog, Illy pet, and also our charm abilities. I wouldn't mind seeing something done to cut down the time of that (and other abilities that have retarded long casting speeds for no reason aka Call to Town, Ports, Certain Group Buffs) but thats sorta minimal in relation to other things that could (but probably won't) be tweek/fixed imo & likely not on anybody's to-do list.
Luckily I made a dark elf so I just use my 10% casting speed temp when summoning a pet mid-fight! >_<
