New Game Experience
It was a total revamp of the user interface, game mechanics, etc.
SWG used to be very similar to EQ2 in play style. Except you could mix and match your training in the various classes. I was for example for the longest time, part Rifleman, part TKA (SWG's version of the brawler, except TKA was actually worth being in SWG) and part medic.
They then simplified the game into around 8 or so classes, removed a ton of combat abilities that you used to be able to clicky with your pointer and came up with some new ones. In order to use these combat abilites you'd select one by hitting the proper key and then right click to use it. Being the click, click, click kind of guy I am that was a real nightmare to adjust to.
They also changed it from the "target and click abilities" style of fighting we use in EQ2 to a "First Person Shooter" style of fighting. Which in and of itself isn't a bad thing, but for the most part, if you wanted to play a FPS game, there are plenty o' those out there to play. A large portion of SWG players didn't want a FPS style.
They changed the armor/weapons too. For instance, imagine you'd been raiding all the T8 zones for 3 months trying to get the best crap in the game. Fighting for contested etc. and had a lot of pretty sweet gear. Then have the developers turn around and make everyone's gear, fabled, treasured, hand crafted etc. all of a sudden darn near the same in stats in every way. Well, all that sweet gear is now no better then casual Joe's gear in ever aspect....
Soooo, SWG turned into a first person shooter, with a very clumsy system for doing the things you used to do with just a quick point and click. Tossed out the ability for a lot of "non first person shooter types" to even be able to compete anymore. Make some favorite classes now extinct, no challenge in being the all mighty Jedi, and all your ubber gear you'd been working for the past 3 years to obtain is now fodder.
What made things even worse is that almost EVERYONE I knew hated it, the forums were screaming with people wanting the old system back but SOE said point blank said, "not gonna happen".
About a month later and all the pvp hot spots were barren, most of my friends quit logging on....it just turned into a ghost town.
All this because (Rumor and Speculation) they wanted to make SWG playable on the yet to be released PS3.
