I don't see an option for Dirge.. and since everyone is picking their class I feel left out.

yea but they have less positional requirments and can shoot their little sissy bows from afar and avoid AE which in my veiw is Huge.

if no single class should be the best DPS, then no DPS class should have better utility then the other.

With all things equal (including the skill of the player behind the toon) I'd have to say Wizard DPS for the short fight with Assassin DPS on the longer fights.

You're right, if a ranger is going to play like you've described they shouldn't have the highest DPS. But if a ranger is played like it should be to maximize (as in standing about 2 meters behind the assassin) than there is no reason they should not be right at the top.
And please, give it a rest with the postional challenges. It is no harder to put an assassin in the right place for max DPS than it is to position a ranger for the same.

Lack of utility should = ability to out-DPS others. period.

Risk Vs reward.

Being an assassin means you have to be within melee range.
