It will really only matter on the evenly matched encounters, where the mob's damage rate is close to your heal rate.
A great example is Kultak -- he has a nasty zone-wide crushing AoE that is brutal on the casters (maybe 6k-12k, depending on mitigation, crit mit, etc). As a just-starting to raid illusionist, my mitigation and critical mitigation were barely enough to join the encounter. Kultak had a 20% chance of one-shotting me, and if I had any damage that 20% went up significantly. In these situations, dropping the crushing debuff dropped the chance of getting one-shot significantly. Now that I have better armor, Kultak doesn't need the combat debuff.
On the other hand, our guilds' seasoned illusionist didn't have any problems with Kultak -- he simply had enough mitigation/crit mit to survive the AoE.
