Ton =/= Tonne
Tonne = Metric Ton = 1000kg originally
Ton = Imperial Ton = 2240 lb originally
Now the word Tonne and Ton have become interchangeable with the rise of both laziness and the metric system.*
However, you are wrong to suggest that Tonne is wrong, and it would be wrong for me to suggest that you are wrong in your counter assertion. However, in the knowledge that you are American, and that the national (and indeed International) units of mass are metric ton's I would suggest that you are in fact wrong, as you assume ton to be 1000kg (in keeping with your own system of measurement) and it is in fact 1016kg (as ton is by definition an imperial ton).
Therefor...
Wrong, it is tonneload, if it is to remain in keeping with your system of measurement.
EDIT:
* :- In common grammar, the English dictionary still lists ton and tonne to be separate quantities.
