Default Soloing- earth vs fire

I know it's the standard to have the tank pet out for soloing, and so logically have tank pet AAs... But i've seen conjurors solo with the mage pet and play sort of like a wizard. My conjy is too low level to try it out- has anyone had significant luck soloing with anything other than the tank pet?

On a related note, what is the scout pet for? I've never seen it used.

As I was leveling up through the ranks, I used the tank pet mostly. When I got the 48 second snare spell I used that and the Mage pet in certain situations like when I had a lot of room to kite the mob. Tank pet was used only when we (My warlock wife and I) were in an area with limited room. We both have a root spell so that was used alot.

The same still applies at 80.. The big difference is the mobs die faster kiting them and when you get your Mythical pet they die even faster.

We left EQ2 about 2.5 years ago and came back last October and I can tell you that the tank pet is not what it use to be (Nor is the conjuror). Before, my wife and I could be in a group, stand in the middle of a group of mobs and AE them down in no time and still have 40-50% health. Now, two hits and we run like sissy's. Tank pet could take alot more damage back then also.

Something seems to have changed while we were gone. Maybe we were a bit overpowered back then.. who knows..

Since we came back, I can count on my fingers how many times I have used my scout pet. With grouped mobs (And even solo mobs) the mage pet does so much damage.. Back then we didn't have the /petranged command so I would use the scout pet almost exclusively.

One recommendation.. when you hit level 50ish I would get the pet heal staff from Living Tombs off of Trade Commissioner Aman. Easy to get and If you were on my server I would help ya get it but I am sure you can get folks to help. It heals your pet for 40% of it's health and saved my ass a few times.. well worth it. Only drawback is it's a 15 minute recast =(

Anyway.. I would just use your pets as you see fit. It will be situational.

Hope this helps..

Scout pet is good if you're like the only mage in the group and you have a dirge instead of troub. Also very good for soloing. If you have mythical pet then that > all.

I'm not sure if i could get my myth pet... My main has his myth but i was fairly lucky to get that, Venekor is quite a small server.

I noticed my Tank pet was still a beast until I hit Kunark, when the mobs simply got exponentially harder. I still bust out the Tank pet when I need something with more defense than my Mythical pet (the Tank pet also seems to hold encounter aggro better than the Mythical, for some reason).

I soloed up with the Air pet until mid RoK, then went earth.

But i was coming off a guardian main, so enjoyed the extra speed of kills above the security of Earth pet usage.

Easy to get? That thing has a horrible drop rate. Easy to spawn the named, but you're very lucky if Yeddahd's Caduceus drops for you. ... As for the original topic, the main point to take home is that using the Mage pet to solo isn't really viable until you hit 55 and get Frigid Winds so you can reliably kite. I never really bothered while leveling up though. Since I don't have my Mythical (and probably never will) I still use my tank pet at 80 when doing dailies in Moors and the recent solo Lavastorm content. I just prefer having something that will get aggro and take the hits when I get jumped by a mob. Solo mobs die fast enough anyway. Most RoK heroic mobs just hit too hard to have the tank pet survive without Plane Shift (and not always then). So I bring out the Mage pet and kite if I really need to take on a heroic.

When I was leveling (up to 70) I very heavily relied on my tank pet. Once I hit RoK, I just Kited everything w/ my mage pet. If you can kill it in under the duration of the snare, its cake, and if you can't, just back your pet off before its going to run out, take your DoTs off it, root it, and stand there till it refreshes

RoK is when the air pet became useless since T8 mobs hit like trucks. Until you get your mythical, solo with your tank pet, or if you really want to kite, you can use your mage pet. Personally, I don't find kiting with the fire pet much more efficient than just chain pulling with the tank pet.

And you are a complete noob if you would choose an air pet over a mage pet for groups, regardless of group makeup. Even when killing single target mobs and grouped with a dirge, the mage pet will still own the scout pet any day of the week.
