The reason is because if your pet is still casting a spell, or casting a CA while running back to you, the game isn't concidering it to be in complete back off mode. Just 1 second ealier, and you should be ok.

Its been a while since I did DT, but the eyeballs always had a 20m range (give or take) on their ae's where the pet can safely cast at 25meters. Because of their size and the zone distance can be kind of deceiving in here and you can probably safely cast from further away than you think. Just play around with max range. If you can cast Deluge, Shattered Terrain, or Calcify, the pet can cast any and everything.

I generally try to send the pet in from far away with vehement gem already on it. It will run up to its max casting range and stop if you have it set to 'pet ranged'. Then I stand near it and wait for the first AE to hit. At that point your ACT can help you plan for the next ae (omg the mob should be dead before then though). When the 2nd ae comes, either back pet off for bubble, or throw on intervention.

Ishbu's post is right, but like he said, judging range is weird in DT. Before starting the fights with VG, my pet used to die a lot.

What kind of sucks about this is that ACT has a latency issue with reading logs, and then from what I understand there are some skills, like enchanter stuns, that will throw a mob's ae timer off. I generally use the + / - 8 seconds rule to ae timers, so when the 10 second ding goes off for the ae, I really should think about backing my pet off. This conflicts heavily with me wanting to get max dps, and leaving it in till say 5 seconds till the AE. I hate that!

This is exactly how I do this and find my mage pet rarely dies, while fighting entire fight as well. From way out of range I send pet, it stops as soon as it can get a spell off, and I can throw spells just inside of it. The pet wont back out to max range, but it will run to the edge from the outside.

Better not be giving Ish all the credit on the same thing that I said...again!

Don't you know? Everyone skips your posts and goes directly for what Ishbu typed.

(kidding)

Actually I was crediting him on saying that 'judging distance in DT is weird'.
