How are they soloing? Do they do any signifigant damage? Defilers are notoriously slow soloers. That being said, taking the right AA lines and gearing for damage can speed this up a bit. At low levels, before you really get any AA's, soloing is painful. If you're an 80th level defiler, the tier 2 shard armor is immensely powerful when it comes to helping us solo for example. I keep a "solo spec" in my AA mirror which leans more heaviliy towards DPS. In the grand scheme of things (i.e. when compared to equally geared, equally skilled non-defilers), defilers are very low on DPS.

This has always bugged me abit. I switched from mystic to defiler and at times it bugs me. When I switched I went froma decent pvper/dpser and able to solo well in melle spec and a good healer in any spec really to a lame pvper/dpser and a good healer.

Correct me if I'm wrong but in the original scheme of things defiler was supposed to be more offensive oriented and mystic defensive wasn't it? So why is it that defiler can't dps his way out of a wet paper sack?

no.. in the original scheme of things, the difference was supposed to be in lore. in the actual scheme of things SOE does't give a shit about lore (which is only fair given that players don't give a shit about it), so we basically get two kinds of shaman.

we can do almost as much dps as a mystic, the problem is that mystic does it through melee, which doesn't require them to stop doing everything else. we can only do it through spells and only if we use DPS-oriented gear and otherwise retarted AA spec and don't heal.

To be honest, any DPS differences lie in how melee dps operates versus caster dps. Mystics get an entire line that converts their spells into CA's, along side other increases for melee based DPS. If the mystic knows how to time their autoattacks between heals/CA's they can put out a good amount of damage.

Defilers were always the more defensive shaman, though we're stronger caster DPS than a mystic. If I'm appropriately geared (i.e. spell casting DPS gear) with DPS stance and Litany of Combat up I can push out decent damage that runs on par with a mystic. The problem is defilers get a lot more defensive abilities and are are simply built to be healing machines rather than DPS due to our AA's and what not. Mystics have closed the gap on healing ability in recent expansions, but I personally feel we are still ahead of them in that respect.

If I had a choice, I'd rather gain more defensive abilities and remain a strong healer than sacrifice those abilities for more solid DPS.

Even with us being stronger casters, I still time my melee hits when casting, and on stuff like Palace trash, I will normally hit between 2.5-4K dps with the occasional spike up to 5K or so. I am wis/sta/agi and pretty much max heal spec. At some point I'd love to get a few void bane items, I think I could get the dps up a good bit with a few pieces of caster jewelry/ void bane procs. But, even with my heal gear on I normally sit above most of the healers for dps (we don't use a fury).

Void Bane procs were nerfed. Not worth having now unless you are trying for a pure dps spec and even then there are better items imo.

Aww i am jealous, you are so lucky. I was doing that until the templar complained to the raid leader that he was doing too much healing.
So now I have to not dps so i can ensure that i do double the amount of healing that the templar does. Ward ward ward ward, debuff, ward, ward fuckingyawn ward. *sigh*

Actually, it is much the same for a mystic. Yeah we can change our nukes to CA's but again, unless we have full AAs for dps and dps gear, our dps is actually pretty terrible, if we are healing at all. Ive seen defilers do much much better than me dps wise.

I can do about the same as the above poster. 4k with spikes of 5. Only real dps gear is a choker and void threaded robe. (palace trash ofc) our mystics do 7k with spikes reaching 9k+.. But it's really no big deal that they do more dps, as we are far better defensively. I too would not sac my def capabilities for more dps. If you want more offense less defense, you can always betray.
