Depends on where you are from my friend. Back home in Michigan I started learning to shoot when I was three years old (bb gun). By the time I was in double digits I could shoot many a rifle and hit things I intended to. By 14 I was throwing skeet and shotgun with my dad. It's a part of the culture out there, and many a 14 year old has their own deer hunting rifle and can clean the deer they bag.
In the city, yeah I don't tell the neighbors I have a gun safe, a few rifles, a shotgun, and two handguns (all registered with the state).
Fear of guns is easily absolved with training and sticking to good safety habits. My son just went through rifle/shotgun training with the Boy Scouts last month, it was a lot of fun.
And yeah.. that's like seven firearms in my house criminals... I'm waiting
