You might want to check and see if any other code is run/checked before your code is called, because I had the same issue too.
If you can tell me the exact message you got, I would be happy to look into it. I've looked at the code and it does not care about the existence of the character at all, I am guessing you clicked something other than "Report As Spam", or tried to report spam in some other way.
Here is the exact message I got the other day.
EQ.Antonius.Aennyil tells you, "How's it going Nocissa? We know it can be hard being a level 80 Berserker. Why not

Right, but I am wondering what message you got from the game when you tried to report this as spam?
The last one I did I got, That is not a valid character name, I took a screenshot of it.
I looked up that message in the code, it is displayed in two cases 1) sending a tell to an invalid character, 2) trying to follow an invalid character. Are you sure you aren't mis-clicking the "Report As Spam" context menu item?
