Don't have a screenshot up my sleeve at the moment, but the icon is a gold coloured bar (looks like the refined gold bar subcomponent used to look like before subcombines were removed). The name is "reflective smoldering shard" and the item is "no value" so you can't sell it to a vendor by mistake. They can however be destroyed if you are really determined.

The prose description when you examine the item reads:
"The strangely reflective surface of this metal shard seems to reflect back your very essence. If refined by a skilled crafter, it might create an item with truly remarkable properties."
And if all that doesn't tip someone off that they should be asking a crafter about it, then I'm afraid someone will just have to hit them over the head with it till they wake up.
