Chromatic Essences drop in addition to previous drops, not instead of them. If this is actually happening then there is a bug somewhere. I checked through yesterday's drops and I didn't see any instances of a Chromatic Essence dropping with nothing else in the chest. What server was this on? I'll dig around a little more.
