Basically, all the items in your moving crate count towards the number of items you can have in a house.
You would still be able to pick them up from the moving crate.; You would also be able to place items (from the moving crate only) up to the house's item limit.; You will not be able to place any new items that are not in the moving crate until you were below the house's item limit.
There are separate limits for books, items and sales displays.; You would still be able to put up your sales displays even with an over-the-limit moving crate.; You could also place new books as long as you weren't over the limit on books.
