Ok, I have a Dirge that I have levelled up and she has been raiding before the expansion and will start doing again soon. I find it a real difference from playing my Necro.
The question I have is around timing of the auto attack, how do you experts do it. I was told if I time my DPS I can significantly raise my DPS but to be honest when I am trying to backstab in among 23 other players the screen is kind of a blur, I did remove spell effects but still it is normally very busy around these mobs.
I currently use the Soul Fire Sabre in my main hand and in my other hand I use Vilucidaes Sword of Shielding, the Sabre has a 4 sec delay and the Sword of Shielding has a 3.0. As both have different timers and due to congestion I am at a loss of how to time my strikes.
Different delay times and "timing auto attacks" is a huge misconception. I rolled with Soulfire Sabre and Edged Pick for a long time (4s and 3s delays respectively) and I didn't notice a decrease in dps from mismatched delays. I now roll with the Clearcutter and Edged Pick (both 3s delays) and, again, I don't notice an increase in dps because my delays now suddenly line up.
In my opinion, when you try to time auto attacks you wind up losing dps because by the time you realize you've swung, you're wasting precious tenths of a second queuing up your next ability.
The only time I could see timing auto attacks to be effective is if your CAs/spells are all 2+ seconds casting times.
Everytime I tried to time my auto attacks, lag or some other random shit would allways throw me off...
Gave up on the whole thing.
Used my time and energy on getting in a good casting order instead
I haven't tested this, but I feel there is a big delay between the actual hit and when you get the animation and the number above the mob's head. So do you guys use a special chat window for timing? Or the ACT plugin? Or is it really pointless?

You sir are correct. You can test this by 1 shotting a grey mob with a bow.
There's a plugin for ACT that makes a beep when you autoattack I think.
Before I came back recently people would say that the hit is at the very start of the animation. Not sure if thats still true or ever was, but I used it on my bruiser to time procs and such and it seemed to work.
