I would say samedai that we were are singers...do you see a singer on tv and think 'whoa he's rock hard!' ?... Not to be beligerant but still, you see chopper or who-the-hell-else on tv who does kong-fu and whatever and you think 'they're a bit duff'...both are popular just in different ways. Singers get people enthused about events and chopper is the event, so to speak.
To put this in terms of EQ2, the bards get everyone buzzed up and ready for action whilst the assassins deal the dirt. Dirge's, as a class, are supposed to be by definition the ones who depress enemies and arouse friends (take that as you will ;)). This is why we are 'utility' as such.
Anyone playing a coercer and parsing over the wizards isn't focusing on their main task i would say, they ARE supposed to be doing similar to us, but in effect, it's bards who are support, dirge for melee and troub for casters. Hard to face but the truth
I hate to say this also but we only get damaging abilities at all so that we can stick up for ourselves, but it's like we are trained by fingertips or 'musical' technique and assassins are trained by wrist/arm or 'movement' technique, for want of a better way to put it.
It's just how it is
At least we can parse well atm compared to some other classes that are supposed to be dps...
