What's really sad is that they never, ever mention the origin of 'leet' and how the whole thing got started, or what 'woot' actually stands for. "We won over the other team." Not as sexy as 'woot', is it?

Counter Strike was released in 1999 as a mod for HalfLife.

If you chose to be on the terrorist team, you could pick an avatar that was a cool south american-looking cocaine cartel type guy. It was called the L337 Krew. Counter Strike also gave rise to the term 'pwn.' As more and more kids and college student got online, there were more and more who could'nt type worth a shit. An icon was born.

It was at this same time when AOL was rising to popularity, and a generation of retards took control of pop culture. (enter the 'lol'ers' 'rofl'ers' and 'stfu'ers') For a time there were distinguishing features between the jargon of the counter strike culture, and the garbage spewed out by the AOL crowd. But, as time has gone by, the two have converged, giving rise to the filth of today (e.g. myspace, cat macros, etc).

So yeah, its all the same now. Everyone pwns the noobs... Everyone needs to stfu... And everyone can has cheezeburger...

I made a lvl 1 human named Woot in EQOA and ran him to Highpass just to say "grats" to all the lvl 50's that stood around all day trying to look all uber.

That's all I would say:

Looking back on it now, I realize how fucking lame I was. Thank God no one knew it was me.

While I may have beaten some other poor sod with a slower inter-tron connection I have never pwn'd anyone/thing noob or otherwise except maybe grandmas ring for crack money last week, but that's only because I can spell Pawned with all it's magical letters.

In the overall scheme of things the fact that they allow people to make shit up (word wise, happens every day just watch your local "well spoken" news-bot) and then they glorify it as if it's some new "inventing the wheel" type moment makes me want to actually go out and harm real people in the face.
