Default Disconnection problem

When I play CS:S online, after a while, I lose connection to my internet, and I need to reset my entire network. Unplug my router, modem, plug em back in, reset my ip, etc.

What could cause this? I have a 100ft CAT5 cord hooked up to my router, and to be quite honest, the outer plastic is drying out and splitting open in some spots, but I only get disconnected when playing online games. I remember for a while in EQ2 I used to lose connection and get booted to character select, and before the first time I quit, whenever I zoned, I'd have to reset my entire network. Charter couldn't figure out what the fuck was happening, so they sent me a new cable modem. I don't think it worked, but I could zone. I'd still go LD at random intervals.

When I first got my cable hooked up, they didn't bury it right away, and it was severed by uhh....well my dad brought the van into the driveway and ran it over. How he got it caught and cut it in half I dont know. But the guy came out and repaired it. But like I said, I can surf the net for hours and hours just fine. I go to play a game, and poof. Problems come.

Also, sometimes when I wake up in the morning and turn the pc on, I need to reset the network because I don't get a connection.

I bet your router is bad.

Or your actual modem.

might be the router, i don't think it's the modem though. we changed it twice. I don't think I actually ever went LD in WoW, but I did have to fuck with some of my network settings to get it to work right.

Since I'm not much of a network guru, I spend most of my time INSIDE computers, would it be possible to just use a 10/100 hub instead of the router and see how that works?

I think I tried it once but I was in a hurry to get into Ahket Aken, and it didn't work immediately so I just put the router back on.

Router vs hub is over my head. I just suggested the router, 'cause more than once we've called our ISP's tech support and they've said "it's either the modem or the router, come trade the modem in that we can do for free."

Its the router. You can't use a hub. Hub is for LAN, not sharing internet.

Try a different router and I bet it fixes your problems.

Or, conversely, connect to the modem directly and try it that way.

I'm not familiar with CS:S but do they do use any kind of special ports? Sometimes you can go into your router's settings and add specific ports. I have had to do this with WoW's patcher and when I hosted a TSpeak server. Again though if this doesn't pertain to CS:S just ignore this post.

hmm, I don't think it's a serious problem like ports. But here's what I'm gonna do. DC into the modem and kick Grind's ass for a while, if I still have to reboot the network, I'd bank on it being my CAT5, if not, well...looks like I get to buy a new router. Maybe wireless, so I don't have 100 feet of network cord snaking through my house

I hear that, I love wireless but not for my gaming PC. Luckily drop ceilings in the bat cave allow for us to run our cables without needing a 100ft of wire. I just hope we don't get critters or something like one of our cats up there chewing on cables :o

But needing to forward a port isn't something that is necessarily serious...it's just part of crap with games and such. I use a linksys router and they make it easy for dummies (myself being one). This is from the applications & gaming tab of my router's admin page.

"
Port Range Forwarding: Certain applications may require to open specific ports in order for it to function correctly. Examples of these applications include servers and certain online games. When a request for a certain port comes in from the Internet, the router will route the data to the computer you specify. Due to security concerns, you may want to limit port forwarding to only those ports you are using, and uncheck the Enable checkbox after you are finished.

Anyway I had issues with WoW and had to do this; it worked stellar afterwards. GL
