The last scene and the end of the credits are a giveaway that there will be a sequel:

If it is a 'Slusho' that hit the water, then we know where it came from. If it was an alien of some kind, it could've fed on fish and other stuff for a month.

The 'Help us' and 'It's still alive' at the end are a sequel giveaway.

So I read that J.J. Abrams said the thing in the last scene hitting the water is supposed to be a satellite that disturbed the monster, who had been dormant for thousands of years...
