Re: Berkeley City Council Voted to remove U.S. Marine Corps Recruiting Station
I hope they use the $ to pay for some marines to sit outside of code pink HQs and protest their hippy asses.

Re: Berkeley City Council Voted to remove U.S. Marine Corps Recruiting Station
I remember being a senior in high school around the time we invaded Iraq. The recruiters would come in everyday, and after a while everyone wanted them kicked out. They were like drug dealers constantly annoying people, and just wouldn't take "no thanks" for an answer. It's one thing to try and get the word out about the marines for people interested, but what they were doing at my school was above and beyond, while pestering people who made it clear they weren't interested.
If those people genuinely didn't want the recruiters there, and it got to the point where they actually had to vote to remove them, so be it. I have no sympathy for those recruiters since I know first hand how invasive they can be. To this day I still get calls almost daily from when my Dumbass friend signed me up years ago for some information packet.

Re: Berkeley City Council Voted to remove U.S. Marine Corps Recruiting Station
Before I go on, I want to say I do greatly respect the Military. I don't, however, respect the man in charge. Bush.
I think a lot of people are tired of their husbands, wives, son's and daughters coming home in a body bag for a war that serves no purpose other than wasting money at this point.
Also, Aduros is right in that claim. The recruiters, not just the marines but all of them, walk around like Salesmen almost. The first "Not interested" is usually ignored.
I had one Army Recruiter that wouldn't leave me the hell alone while I was trying to get to my college class. I was late and I finally just told him "Look, if you just recently changed the rules and you allow convicted felons to join then sure, I'll take your card, if not, I'm late for class."

Re: Berkeley City Council Voted to remove U.S. Marine Corps Recruiting Station
There is nothing wrong with the army recruiting. There is, however, a problem with lying to applicants, offering false promises, and approaching an invasion of privacy. Unfortunately I have seen all of these things a number of times. I realize our situation is critical for man power, but the integrity of the recruiting process has been corroded. As a result, I cannot fault the city for taking action.
Additionally, if the federal government should consider taking away "Federal aid" as you say, then I believe they should eliminate taxing them as well. State/City governments should never be in a situation where they are essentially held hostage by the check-writers in federal government.

There is a federal law (not sure of the name at the minute and at work so I don't have time to look it up) that states that as a educational instution if you want federal aid you must allow military recruiting on your campus. I know over the course of the past 4 or 5 years there have been a few big time colleges that have tried to get ride of the Military from recruiting on there campus but never passed due to the fact they would lose millions in federal aid.
On another note yes even as a Verteran I do belive Military recruiters are a bit aggressive sometimes and they can lie to potental recruites and it's wrong. I think for high school, they should only be allowed to talk to seniors and it should only be done a few times a quarter in a job seminar type forum. As for college, well if companies can recruit on campus so should the military yea know.
