blu ray > hd dvd period...

Anyways, I am waiting for the 120gb ps3, or whichever model comes out with the new generation of BRDvD players. Might even go for an 80gb if they drop the price.

Stuff like this also helps...

cheap BRDvD movies... 11.99$+ JR bluray movies sale as low as $11.99 - [H]ard|Forum
cheap BRDvD player... 149.99$ now direct - Pioneer BDC-202BK

Because it's only superior on the storage front. It's more expensive from a media and studio standpoint due to the licensing, and the licensing also means Sony can control what content is released on it.

Just like every other piece of technology in existance, over time it will become cheaper and cheaper to make. When PS3 went on sale, Sony was losing a few hundred per model sold. Now, they are turning a slight profit. A year from now I bet you the consumer is paying about 1/2 of current pricing. And eventually youll be buying discs by the 100 stack for $50 or less.

We've been through this before with cd's and dvd's.

They didn't learn a thing. This is the exact same scenario, with dumber consumers.
They learned how to win the fight... biggest issue with BetaMax/VHS fight was the fact that they wanted to glom onto every profit available, they were too stupid/uninformed to allow proper licensing to other manufacturers for the actual equipment. JVC won with VHS because they happily handed out the play back technology with minuscule per unit rights that netted them billions of returns. 10 manufacturers versus 1 basically flooded the market with the VHS tech. This time it wasn't the equipment but the availability of content. BluRay was available 3-1 with more studios signed on exclusively and when Warner jumped ship Toshiba lost plain and simple.

How didn't they learn? Dumb consumers bought both knowing full well that one was going to fold... me I waited knowing that one would have to fail... will I buy BluRay? maybe in 5 years or so when I don't have a choice because they stop making Std.Def DVD.

I was referring to duplication materials. I remember paying out the ass for a 3 pack of blank discs when the only CD burners out were 1x. Now I can buy a spool of 100 for like $15-20.

I'm not certain it's applicable in this instance. With the trend towards DRM in the HD format, I don't think duplication materials are going to be even possible with Blu-Ray.

Anything duped is going to automatically downgrade to non HD resolution through HDMI cables (which is supposed to become a requirement).

It would be folly to underestimate piracy tecnology, but still...

This is why the DRM people are ultimately going to fail... hell there was BBC story (Reuters I think dropped it on the wires actually) that the Apple Fair play system was finally broken without using the burn and rip method.

They think that the 100-200 DRM creation firms worldwide are smarter and better than the 1-2 million hackers worldwide who do anything they can to defeat these systems. Right or wrong DRM will ultimately fail... as they just wont be able to create new algorithms faster than they can be broken.

With the usage of Solid State Drive technology eventually it won't matter... 5 years for 1TB SSHD in a credit card or smaller package for less than 500 bucks. You heard it here first.

Duplication materials are already possible with Blu-Ray. BD-R and BD-RE came out with the launch of the Blu-Ray.
