Does someone actually trust the factory OS install on a laptop?

Can you get drivers for XP and Vista at Sony's website? I've found it to be a complete nightmare in the past. Each file you download checks to make sure that the computer matches the model no. and many of them check to make sure you have installed other pieces first. I spent 10 hours installing 2000 on a Sony laptop because of the driver nightmare. I found other websites people had setup with workaround information and links to Sony's Japanese FTP site. I vowed never to buy another Sony laptop after that. Tech support nightmare.
