Re: Say my name. Say my name bitch!
There are so many areas where discrimination against the gay & lesbian community simply has to be elimated, insurance, taxes and healthcare are just a few of them.
A gay friend of mine lost his long term partner 5 years ago, before they had te right to a legal civil partnership here in the uk, and he is still waiting for the legal types to sort out the probate issues because Samual (his partner) died Intestate (without writing a last will and testement).
Had he been a straight woman living with a man then he would have been considered his commonlaw spouse under uk legislation at the time of his death and would have automatically been entitled to his estate as Samual had no surviving relatives.
The current state of play on this is that the mortgage lender took possession of the house that they had both lived in because the house had been puchased by Samual some ten years ago and Derek was not co-mortgagee and despite the fact that he could easily afford the mortage payments they were not willing to permit him to continue paying a mortgage on a property which was in the name of another (dead) person. Therefore in order for Derek to continue living in the house he had to get his own mortgage and buy his own home back. He also had to go to the expense of having building surveys and searches done.
So not only did he lose his long term pertner, he almost lost the home they had shared and incured unecessary costs all because of the inequality of an antiquainted and outdated UK legal system.
