Random ramblings: EQ2flames vs. EQ2 Official Forums
Put it here because it's not really game related, and only writing it cuz I can't sleep and need to bitch randomly about something. Putting aside the issue whether mods on official forums over-moderate or not.
The whole Idea behind playing an MMO over a single player rpg, fps, etc, is the social integration involved around the game. Whether its friends, enemies, etc, you need some method of communication with each other. Where this comes into the EQ2flames vs Official forums debate is that with all online games, no-one can stay around forever, and so people will whether by choice or by being forced have to leave the game.
The problem with the official forums is that once your account time runs out...you can't post there anymore. If the official forums were all that you had to keep in touch with people in-game, you'd be shit out of luck. Great thing about flames on the other hand, is the lack of an active eq2 account requirement. People (imo) really don't like browsing forums where they can't post what they know on the subjects in question, and so while a fair number of current eq2 players posting on flames might still post on official forums, the rest won't ever touch the official forums.
The extra traffic is good though, and I'd think that the average eq2 flames users, even if they've quit in the last year and a half would still know more about the game than the average official forums member.
On another note: A really big argument used by people on the official forums to criticize flames is that everyone here hates the game, and will take ever opportunity possible to bad-mouth the game, the Dev's, and the other players. Honestly, what the fuck else should someone expect? When was the last time a person went onto a forum and started a thread to say "I was fighting a mob today, I clicked a CA, and the effect went off on the mob, thanks!" or "I was healing a zone today, and when I cast my heal at a group member or myself, our health went up! Thanks for keeping the heals working properly!!". People go to forums to either
A: Learn more about the game/other players
B: Explain about problems in the game you've found, to educate others (players, dev's, coders, etc).
Another big argument from people on official forums: the obscenities used on this site and their amounts. /shrug, people swear. Usually every other sentence I say irl contains some swear or other. Some people aren't bothered by them in the least.
If you want the dev's to read the forums, and respond to them, why would you insult them, and be "mean" in the post, etc. The problem is that posts aren't always noticed by dev's, and it is almost always the most outlandish ones that do attract the attention of the people who matter in the issue. (The rules on the official forums for example: If you put "Dev read this" or put a dev's name in the title, a dev will not read it. If you address a dev in the post, a dev will not respond to it. wtf else are you supposed to do?)
Expanding on that, what do you do when you have made polite posts, on a serious (or non-serious for that matter), and have had your posts (as far as you know) ignored? EX: "WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH DEVS????THERE HAS BEEN A FUCKING BROKEN GAME MECHANIC SINCE THE LATEST EXPANSION RELEASE, WHY DON'T YOU LAZY FUCKERS LEARN HOW TO FUCKING DO YOU JOBS AND FIX YOUR FUCKING GAME????" Which could be applied to either the once broken arrow mechanics, or to the memory leak in VP that was feedback'd, and posted about multiple times, yet had no word on fixing it (Don't know if its still fucked up). There's not a human on the planet, who after being ignored time and time again, who will not raise their voice and their anger.
To the argument that "this is a game, get over it", when applied in perspective to for example: the dev leaking strats to only certain guilds, or just a general disrespect directed towards players from SOE community service people, GM's, etc. Yes, this is a game, but:
A. We pay for this game, that alone elevates the issue beyond brushing it off as "just a game"
B. This is the Dev's FUCKING JOBS. THIS IS NOT A FUCKING GAME FOR THEM. They get paid for this, and if they continually fuck up, why are they still getting paid??
For a RL comparative example to the Dev leaking strats: If a doctor were to expose private information on one of their patients, information that would be considered confidential/privileged information, that doctor would be sued. Why would they be sued? Because they signed a contract saying that the information they are privy to, is *not* to be distributed to other people.
A SOE Dev is privy to confidential information on game mechanics. And it is against SOE policy for those Dev's to release that information to the general public. Why has there been no visible repercussions about this? As I said before, THIS IS THEIR JOB, there should be some fucking consequences to violating corporate policy.
Yes, just because they're developers, doesn't mean that they shouldn't be allowed to play the game. Of course they should be able to play the game, *no-one* doesn't want the dev's playing the game. The problem comes when the dev's reveal their position within SOE to their guild, and provide privileged information to said guild.
Honestly, if the EQ2flames site was as the official forums fanbois describe it, as a place where nothing productive, just flaming of players/SOE employees, completely lacking of the well-spring of information available here, at a better quality than any other site, flames would have fizzled out a long while ago.
To the argument that raiders should just go away, and EQ2 would be a better game: EQ2 was released as a game with raiding, grouping, soloing, and tradeskilling. IMO: If SOE were to ever do away with a single faction of the game, no matter how small it was compared to the total player base, the game would be handicapped for the rest of its suddenly shorter life (especially considering how small EQ2 is, and how small their market share is, every customer they keep is invaluable).
So yea, this started out as EQ2flames VS Official forums, and turned into random ramblings. /pass out.
