Your lack of comprehension is amazing. What they are doing not only benefits them personally (free prosthetics/government assistance) they are helping others by getting more publicity/aid/money to help clear the mines fields.

By the way, what is dignified about getting your fucking leg blown off and surviving it? The dignity of these ladies comes from the fact they they refuse to be shoved out of sight like something to be ashamed of. They're doing something to try to prevent more people from being hurt like they were.

They don't need a beauty pageant, they need to not be blown the fuck up in the first place. The pageant is just a way of dealing with the fact that they were blown up and that more are being blown up every day while trying to live peacefuly. The pageant gets publicity which brings in money and people to help clear the mines. It's a good idea.

It's nice to live in the U.S. where violence isn't usually the first choice of method to solve a problem. We aren't often exposed to the kind of life people in third world countries live everyday. I've been to Iraq and Bosnia. I've seen first hand the results of the violence. I've even dealt it out to those that deserved it and I'll never feel bad about it. However, most of the victims of the mines in Africa are not combatants; they're just people that have the misfortune of living there. They're women, children and men just trying to take care of their families in peace.

Regardless, my initial point stands, that this is nothing more than a publicity stunt for the issue and nothing less.

Regardless, bringing publicity to it isn't suddenly going to motivate a country that is already weary of war into stopping the people who plant them or helping those effected. Especially when it comes to Africa.

What have we done for Darfur? How much of that was in the news? Be realistic.
