STOP Virgin: Keep Virgin from destroying the Internet

Quote:
Virgin Media is going to start making their users pay more to access better sites in the UK. This means if no one fights back or puts their voice out, then other ISP's will think that it will be ok to do this. Spread the word around about Virgin. There are currently 3.5 million subscribers to Virgin in the UK.

Neil Berkett, the new CEO of Virgin Media (my ISP at home in London, along with BT) has announced that he considers Net Neutrality to be "a load of bollocks" and he's promised to put any website or service that won't pay Virgin a premium to reach its customers into the "Internet bus lane."

As a Virgin customer, I'm not paying to see those services that bribe Virgin to reach me, I'm paying to reach the entire web, whichever bits I think are useful, as quickly as Virgin can deliver them.

Theoretically, I'm locked into a Virgin plan for another six months, but as far as I'm concerned, they've just announced that they're violating the agreement by announcing that the services I can reach will be systematically slowed down unless they pay Virgin extra. That means that we're now null and void. I'll be calling to cancel today.

Virgin Media CEO: Net neutrality is "bollocks," promises to breach agreement with customers - Boing Boing

The new CEO of Virgin Media, Neil Berkett, has openly stated in an interview that they think net neutrality is “a load of bollocks” and claimed they're already doing deals to deliver some people’s content faster than others. They would then put websites and services that don't pay Virgin in the "slow lane", meaning those sites would load slowly and cause most users to give up using them, feeling forced to use whatever Virgin wants to push through their network.

This is not the first time an internet provider infringes upon net neutrality, but it is the first time that an ISP so brutally states that they simply plan to limit internet access to a television-like system in which the access provider completely regulates the content you have access to.

Virgin Media has over 3.5 million customers in the UK and the real danger is that when they start applying this system to their network, all major internet providers around the globe will soon follow the trend. Because this is exactly what major ISP's have been wanting to do for years.

But we can stop it.

If the masses of the internet react against this, we will set an example of what happens when one provider tries to take away our freedom. We will make it very clear that any ISP who tries to infringe upon net neutrality will see its popularity go down the drain because the users don't accept it. And we'll see to it that only the providers who care about safeguarding our internet freedom have our support.
Spread the word. Its finally happening in earnest, and tbh this bullshit could gay up the net hardcore within a few years if only a few ISP's get away with it.

It won't happen. Websites don't want to lose business because some company wants to get rich of the interwebs. You can't force people in a free market to buy shit, so this will backfire.

This can go two ways. you way or a dark time for net way. If the bigger company follow around the globe will also do this in time alot of people living out side of bigger city will be limited big time (atlas here the choice of ISP is smaller out side of the big city) eventually some wise guy will bring it back and be the savior but do we really want 10 years or more of Shit before the wise guy come.

I don't believe it will go true to much lose at stake for one company to do it at this time. but if does goes true in England and ISP starts to follow then its time to scream The Internet is falling
