But it's a much bigger one for Obama. McCain has a 30+ year public history to fall back on and if Huffpost thinks telling people how much John hates Bush actually hurts him well LoL. Obama on the other hand is built on the premise of his 2004 convention speech. The proper focus on that considering everything we now know about his church and other associations could completely undermine that and leave the public image with what he really is, a mediocre politician who happens to be damn good at giving speeches. Obama himself has given the right so much real ammo that it's truly painful listening to yet another tired rant about "Barrack Hussein Osama" being a muslim sleeper.
Edit: He's wearing it because it was a gift from a vet. Whether it was staged or not is up for debate but can't knock him on that. Also, the quote omits him calling it a substitute for patriotism.
