Re: 300
300 is a movie depicting the battle of Thermopylae. Basically the Persian army was taking over the known world and was marching towards Greece with a million man army. The Greeks were all small states that fought all the time and had no chance of winning alone. The Spartan's sent a 300 man army, hence the movie title, to delay the Persians. They were simply hoping that the Greeks could be united to fend off a common enemy. King Leonidas led his army to Thermopylae where there was a very small pass between a mountain and the sea to maximize his effort. The 300 Spartans were able to kick ass for a week because they were insane fighters that devoted their entire life to the art of combat. After that...well I won't ruin the movie but you can look it up in the history books.
While the movie does not look like a totally accurate portrayal of the actual events, who cares. It is a kick ass story from history and I think any artistic creativity will be to place emphasis on certain aspects. There is no way other way to convey the uber pwnage of 300 men killing 50,000.
p.s. A really good book on the battle of Thermopylae is "Gates of Fire" I can't recall the author off the top of my head. It is more of a historical fiction, but a very good read. It really goes into the mentality of the Spartans and their society of warriors.
