To marry something is simply to join two or more things together. That's all it means.
The only people I can see opposing same sex marriage are religious fanatics and those that don't want to extend the same financial and legal protection to homosexual couples that heterosexual couples currently enjoy, because they think it will cost them money.
If a child must have, by law, both a mother and a father what's next? Forced surrender of children if their parents get divorced or if one of their parents dies? That's the natural progression of the stupidity that's being used to justify the ban on homosexual marriage.
How does same sex marriage destroy the "sanctity" of marriages as so many people claim? It doesn't. It's just the religious nuts using the fear inherent in their superstitions to as a weapon to force their beliefs on others.
The truth is it's all about denying some citizens of our country the rights and freedoms that others take for granted because of greed and bigotry.

First of all, that may be all it means to you, but it's not all it means to a majority of the blasted country.
Although I really do find it funny that we conservatives use the argument that if you change the meaning of marraige to allow sodomites to marry, then why not allow multiple wives? In your defiinition this is entirely possible with "join two or more things together". Awesome... |

Since conservative also are supposed to believe in limited government, why does the secular state even care what happens between consenting adults?

It's not "my" definition. It's what the word actually means.
I don't have a problem with multiple wives or husbands if the people involved make the choice to enter that kind of relationship freely. If it's forced on them by others, then I have a problem with it.
