It's possible to lose a large portion of your frontal lobe, and still live, which is what happened to him.

I've read quite a few articles that state such in some of the science/medicine journals I read. What happens when you lose that, I don't know. But if that picture is correct, it appears he has about 40% brain mass loss. Honestly, I'd let the poor kid die. If he EVEN comes out of that comatose state, he'll be nothing more than a one year old the rest of his life.
