There's no way that it's a 50/50 for high speed wrecks....or any other wrecks for that matter. I'm kinda busy at work today or I'd find some facts and figures proving my point. But I can say without a doubt that, at the VERY least, 95% of the time, the seatbelt should've been worn.

I won't disagree that in most cases wearing a seat belt is beneficial. But I think that benefit decreases dramatically in "high-speed" collisions because of the likelihood of the car tumbling or having a secondary collision.
That said, I don't advocate not wearing a belt. I was just implying that in a situation like the Hogan wreck you cannot assume that a belt would have saved him from catastrophic damage.

Re: Hulk Hogan's Son
There was a kid sitting in my backseat who did not want to wear his seatbelt.
Stupid skateboarding asshole.
What did I do? I told everyone else in the car very discretely to make sure they hold on tight for a second, and at the bottom of the offramp off the freeway i was going 60 and then slammed on the brakes at the bottom to stop. he went flying into the passenger seat and didnt say one word to me.
I looked back and said hey, put on your seatbelt please and he did =)

I understand the point you're making, and I semi-agree with it. I just can't see how, even at high speed, especially with the car rolling, it would help to be ejected....with the exception of VERY random, and lucky cases.
From my experience with friends wrecking, customers wrecking, and just reading situations on the news, I've only seen 1 wreck where wearing the seatbelt killed the person. This was a guy who wrecked into a creek, was upside-down with all that water rushing in, and he couldn't get his belt off, and eventually drowned.
Every single high speed accident (75mph+ and rolling) i've known about, (which unfortunately has been well over 10 friends, or just ppl i know of)... if they were wearing their seatbelt, they lived, if not, they died.
Just my experience tho. I'd actually really like to see some facts/figures if anyone has the time.

Re: Hulk Hogan's Son
I love the people who go on about how if their buddy riding his motorcycle had been wearing a helmet when he wrecked, it would have killed him!
Seatbelts are just as important as helmets.
My mom even rides a Harley, I've explained to her that should she crash (likely) that if she ends up with a head injury that requires her to have constant care, she had two choices:
1. If you are wearing a helmet and it happens, I take you into my home and take care of your sorry, drooling ass.
2. You don't wear a helmet, you ass goes into the shittiest, dirtiest assisted living facility I can find in hopes that when they kill you accidentally, or just treat you so badly it really really obvious, I can sue them and retire.
And she knows I'm not joking. We have a great relationship that way.

As it should be! I wouldn't consider riding without my helmet! I also would not let anyone in my car ride without a seatbelt. Same reasoning. If you're in need of care because bad shit happens to good people, fine I'm all there for you. But if you're in need of care because you can't be bothered to wear an ugly helmet or take extra time to fasten your seatbelt, well, you shouldn't be fucking retarded.

Re: Hulk Hogan's Son
Helmets are a lot more important, I've never heard a disadvantage to wearing a helmet.
Seat beats on the other hand can result in the passenger being trapped inside the automobile after a catastrophic crash. I can't think of a more unpleasant death than being burned alive while being tied down by a mangled seat belt. (Or drowning in a creek like Laalon said.)

You can ride your motorcycle here in New Hampshire without a helmet.. live free or die!

Re: Hulk Hogan's Son
There are people here that do as well, as long as you're wearing eye protection I think. I prefer to wear a helmet, as does the rest of the people we ride with. I've seen people on crotch rockets driving down the freeway without a helmet, and I can't help but think that guy is an idiot. Of course I see it most on cruisers, but every now and again...
