Ya know, if this was like a 10 yr old or something that may not see the full extent of getting too close to a huge metal object moving 50mph or so, I'd feel bad, and be like "wow, that sux, I feel bad for him". However, this fucking idiot was 17 yrs old, and should've, or did know the full extent of what could happen.

I do not feel sorry for the parents or him. Often times more than not church groups and youth run amok, especially ones from down here in the south where we act like we would never do things like this, but are in fact itching to show the ignorance. i have heard (although i have a hard time believing it) that half of the people that have ever lived are alive now. if that is true it means that we are stuck with half of all of the stupidest people ever to walk the earth which is a good reason why we get so many articles like this.

I think the real reason we get "so many" articles like this is we love stories about spectacularly stupid people and we have the technology to spread such sensationalism within seconds. Don't assume that the volume of coverage can be equated with the volume of occurrence. The news caters to what keeps our attention and we buy it.
