Default Who decided Gold was valuable?

Seriously, Why was gold used as currency and deemed more valuable then a rock? where did it originate?

I mean, gold back in the day was absolutely Worthless. What did it do besides shine and weigh you down?

I can see it's value now, its a highly conductive metal and a valued Resource in the building of computers and other electrically conductive devices.

So who and when decided Gold was Valuable! there has to be some history about it some where, right?

Rare, solid, durable, easily exchanged, and SHINY!

Seems like a pretty good choice as a currency/medium of exchange. People before 2000BC couldn't have been stupid enough to use apples as a store of value. Would suck to wake up to find all of your wealth rotted away =p.

Wow, it never amazes me how much useless knowledge i can force into my head :D

I also had no idea that electrum was another one of SOE's metal mistakes (seriously, whoever came up with the ingame stones and metals needs a lesson in geology i mean come on, silver is a rare while gold is common. alloys existing in nature and so on.)

And also, who the heck writes this stuff, thats a whole friggin essay on gold. Someone out there really needs a new hobby :D

Speaking of precious materials...

http://www.universetoday.com/am/publ...e.html?1322004

10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 carats? Sheeeiiiit.

I think the only reason diamonds are considered a precious stone is because of the diamond companies stranglehold on the market. They control the flow of the market, making it seem that they're rare. They're really not...

You should instead ask how the Federal Reserve is able to take paper, print a 100 on it, and make you want to kill other people for quantities of it.

The thing about precious metals and stones are that they generally don't become precious until theres enough of it around to make it known. There are plenty of "really really rare" metals out there but no one cares if you make jewelery from them cause people don't know they exist. ("Hey baby this is a ring made from the only brick of solidified vegemite known to exist in the universe" "Oh yeah, who cares?")

There also have to be enough of it to cover semi-large/large transactions from currency to metal to currency. Like with gold or diamonds.
