Classifieds are probably the first place your average family will go to sell unwanted puppies, but you probably won't find exactly what you're looking for. Depending on the person, the care might be good/bad/medium, but you should be able to determine that if you go to see the puppy before you buy.

Also, make sure that the puppy is old enough when you get it. What happens a lot of times, is people will take puppies away from the mothers before they should be, which can lead to problems. Don't remember how old they should be when you can take them away from the mothers, but be wary of people selling very young puppies.

Otherwise, the best guaranteed places to get dogs would probably be your local shelter/rescue center or a specialized website. Shelter dogs can be a bit of a gamble with personality, since you don't know what they've been through, but there's a lot of nice dogs out there that are unwanted, so that would probably be a pretty safe bet.

Huskies and Akitas are working dogs. Just so you know. I hope you have a lot of energy and a good pair of boots. They'll need a shitload of walks and play or they'll get bored and that's really bad in a dog like that.

Akitas can be a bit... twitchy too. The ones I've known have been a bit overconfident, dominating even, and really not great with kids. I've not known any Huskies first hand, but I've known working dogs and they really need so much attention and that not all of them are really suitable as pets in certain environments.

I'm sure you thought of that already and I don't mean any offense. I just thought I'd mention it in case you were hoping for a dog that's happy to vegetate on the sofa all day and be easy to handle.

Also, I don't know if in the states you have an equivalent of 'The Kennel Club' in the UK. Basically they're the organisation who handle all the registration of pedigree (purebred) dogs and help ensure breeding is done carefully and responsibly to avoid too much inbreeding. But The Kennel Club are a good source of info on where to find reputable breeders for the breed you want. I expect whatever you have in the states would be a good place to get advice.

10-12 weeks. You can get away with 8-9 weeks, but a bit more time is good. Kittens are much more clingy to their mothers than puppies are tbh.

AKC = American Kennel Club. So yeah, same thing, just better. My family breeds miniature pinschers and uses the newspaper and a website, but like has been said, a lot of the sellers in the paper aren't really looking out for their dogs best interests, just looking for cheap studs and lots of puppies, regardless of health red flags, etc...
