If you're on a budget and absolutely MUST have a purebred dog, try looking for a nearby purebred rescue. Even ones for other breeds or in other states/provinces should be able to refer you to the closest one for what you want.
Avoid pet stores, like I said earlier in the thread, and avoid people who advertise in newspaper classifieds. Both tend to breed w/out any standards and at a detriment to the health of the parents and puppies just to make as much money as possible.
Also, consider getting an adolescent dog (6-18mo). They're generally more available, take less work than puppies, and if you're good with dogs, they'll bond just as quickly as a puppy would.
