The MEGA BLOKS were something my lovely wife stumbled across and figured it was a rather large, but cost-effective gift for our son... obviously, they were priced so low because they had some autistic kid design and package the product.

My real grief with modern-day Lego sets is that the models are increasingly childish, unsophisticated, and comprised more and more of large prefabricated parts where in the past you would use several smaller pieces in their place.

There are a few of these sorts of sets - like the boats that have solid, pre-fab hulls (so that you can actually float them in the tub or the local pond). Many of the sets are far from unsophisticated, however. They have some very interesting and creative moving parts and mechanisms that are built piece-by-piece. The pre-fab pieces allow the sets to maintain some sort of realism, rather than having that blocky, cumbersome look to everything.
My biggest beef with LEGO these days is that it is no longer the free-form build. The sets come with plans and, for the most part, you build what is pictured on the box and have at it. When my son is a little older, we will likely tear everything down and build our own shit.
And, yes, beers are mandatory.
