Re: True Blood? (HBO Series)
I've read several of the books. They're more like Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series. You know, whiny female protagonist who gets in over her head all the time despite being speshul and having uber powers that get more and more uber after every book that comes out. And they all have pseudo-romantic themes that are an excuse to get the heroine into a leather bodice and go to bondage parties (to rescue people, of course, not to participate). Alas, if you go to the fantasy section in the bookstore these days, there's a preponderance of this sort of dreck.
The one shot "Sunshine" by Robin McKinley and the Harry Dresden series by Jim Butcher are both much better crafted examples of the genre (granted, I've only read through vol. 8 of the latter).
