LOL what made the people believe that they were entitled to the 450k that the rest of the community donated to them in the form of a house?
If I loaned you $100 and said, "Man, I don't mind loaning you this money, cause I know you need some help to finish bills this month, and I don't care if you ever pay me back, cause we're friends. But I'm asking you not to spend this on the strip club." And you did, don't I have reason to beat that $100 out of you?
Similarly, seeing as this family was already struggling with finances, and it was obvious that they weren't the most business savvy group, especially in the contruction field(as noted by the shambled house and septic system that didn't work properly), how could this have been anything besides a horrible decision?

Starting a business has slightly better odds of success than the lottery. The thing I can't believe is that after being given a house like that free and clear they would then seek to get back a sizable mortgage payment... Just keep the fuckin thing for your kids or something.

Again, bad analogy.
They took a gift and tried to build a better life around it. They didn't buy lottery tickets or take it to Vegas to parlay it into bigger winnings. They tried to start a business but we have no details why the business failed.
