I'm just wondering why the hell they thought now, of all times, would be a good time to start a construction company.

Sure it was their house and they could do whatever they wanted with it, but anyone who even barely paid attention to the news would know that construction probably isn't the hottest business sector right now.

How do you know they didn't intend to do charity work if the business was successful?

Also, who really fucking cares? They were GIVEN the house, there's millions of people that are given free things that act in greed, there's even those of us that look or expect to be given things for free. You're really just pissed it wasn't you that got a free house.
Getting a job to pay the bills is a whole different ballgame. You can't go from outhouse to penthouse instantly, you need to pay your dues. He(they) should have attained a construction worker job, not mortgaged their future for instant power (being a CEO). You can't leapfrog and expect to be successful; you have to put in the legwork.

PS.

I do have a free house, with no mortgage, and sustain myself on a smaller income than I otherwise would.

They all do offer and/or highly recommend finacial planning. But that is as far as they can take it.
Seems to work just fine for Homeowners' Associations telling you what to do with your house...

Now that should be unconstitutional.

It's as if owning a house is like owning a professional sports team. Do those usually have the right of secession from their respective leagues?

They didn't give you a house either. You choose whether you want to buy or build in that area and agree to adhere to their charter. But even they have limits as to what codes they can mandate.

The whole thing is a stretch. If they own neither the land nor the house, then they are usurping the powers of the municipality or of whatever government has its jurisdiction there. And if governments can delegate powers to private concerns with ease, then I guess having something like OCP running the Detroit PD isn't far-fetched fiction. Or maybe it's already reality, hasn't anyone seen Animal Precinct?

It was in very poor taste to take a donation and use it to leverage an investment. If this was a CEO of a major corp, he would definately have some fabricated charges brought against him even though this is not illegal.

This is definate proof of the old proverb, give a man a fish and feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime.

No competant business would leverage a startup the way this went down. I mean spending this amount of cash on stuff that can't be collateralized, you have to be kidding me....business 101.

As a banker, this is why I tell people its a bad idea to put your house up to fund a business.

As a sweaty warehouse shipper and receiver of all things cardboard, putting your house up to fund a business is my professional advice.

Fuck, if you fuck up so bad that you wind up going to jail, your family gets to give you money so that you can become one of my tens of thousands of clients.

Total win win for me.
