The Sox had 2 options:

1> Keep Ramirez even though he would tank their season (and have no doubt, he would), let him walk at the end of the season and pick up a couple of compensatory draft picks.

2> Get rid of him now for 50c on the dollar, and have a shot at the playoffs.

They were NOT going to pick up his $20 million option; that is exactly why Manny started pouting. He came into camp with the best attitude he'd had in years, produced reasonably for 2 months and thought ownership should have exercised his option at that point. The Sox knew better; even when he was playing well, he was obviously not the same Manny from 3-4 years ago. And since the Mitchell Report, 37 year old players won't be miraculously regaining their skills.

I'm not generally a big believer that you need a happy clubhouse to win, but there are extraordinary circumstances that can poison it to the point that you can't. The Sox at least have a chance now and picked up a player who has already made a difference (although, given, against the A's), and Ramirez will be a good soldier for the Dodgers and probably propel them to the playoffs. He's still a damn fine hitter, and the same... aloofness... that makes him so wacky is what makes him so dangerous in the clutch; he doesn't feel pressure.

Sure Manny is hitting now, but wait until someone rubs him the wrong way or he decides to be a baby. Plus the liability for him isn't his hitting..it is his fielding. Wait until he costs the Dodgers a few games with that.

As a Red Sox fan, I'm sad to see him go, but he is just auditioning for more pay. His best years are behind him, at this point, .300/30/100 will be good for him..but I see him slowly declining after this point. He's almost 37.

Just wait until he decides his knee is sore when facing a good pitcher
