Also this will probably mean either a hike in the cost of calls, or call and sms deals will be slightly crappier from now on, to cover any potential lost revenue. The phone companies are unlikely to just swallow it.

Sprint charged me $200 last year when I cancelled. I'd been a customer for 10 years.

About 10 months prior to cancelling, I'd upgraded my text messaging from the minimum to unlimited in order to talk to my daughter who lives out of state. Unbeknownst to me, this constituted agreeing to another contract.

So, for agreeing to pay them more money so I could talk to my daughter more often, they felt it necessary to pin me down to another contract...after 10 years...and not even tell me they were doing it.

Fuck them.

This is common practice actually, though At&t has gotten better at telling you that this is taking place. Though the consumer advocates now tell you any time you discuss making changes to your plan (especially if you are well out of contract range) state to them emphatically that you do not want the changes to extended or renew your contract. As they have to honor this especially if you are moving your plan up and not down.

Personally without my contract I never would have upgraded to the Tilt this last week... when I found it for 149.99 with 50.00 rebate card I couldn't pass it up, but if I'd had to pay 549.99 I never would have changed from my old Motorola L2. So contracts have their place.
