Rifleman on the Loose in Wisconsin
Camo gunman shoots four out for a swim - CNN.com
Said he was 7-10 feet away from one, but did not go on to elaborate if he snuck up that close, if they were running towards him, or what...
Wow, that's like, Civil War close with a rifle.....

Re: Rifleman on the Loose in Wisconsin
Weapon inaccuracies of the past forced formations to be really, really close to shoot each other. Just stating the absurdity of being that close with a rifle of all things looks like. I'm more curious to wtf is up with the north right now between knife man and Rambo here.

Re: Rifleman on the Loose in Wisconsin
If he had said Revolution close, then I would have made that connection.
But with the advent of rifling, I think Civil War weaponry was fairly accurate.

Re: Rifleman on the Loose in Wisconsin
Yeah but you're forgetting the state of education. WW2 is as good as the Revolution tbh.

Re: Rifleman on the Loose in Wisconsin
They didn't even get that close in the revolutionary war. Volley fire from muskets didn't have to be accurate, it just needed to be pointed in the right general direction. 15 foot encounters is what cops and self defense minded civilians practice for because its supposedly a common distance.
But 7-10 feet. Hrm, how big is a boxing ring? That may be more like UFC close.

Re: Rifleman on the Loose in Wisconsin
The tactics of the Civil war by no means matched the advances in technology during the years since the revolutionary war. Remember that Old Hickory was one of the first recorded to employ sniper tactics in a major conflict, also guerilla tactics and what was mainly considered "unfair fighting." Leading up the Battle of New Orleans. During the Civil war, typical battles were waged anywhere from 20 paces (About 6 yards) to face-to-face confrontations with loaded muskets and bayonets. I understand that "revolutionary war" close might've been a more apt term, but both do still apply.
And to Hoss - Absolutely right about innaccuracy, more people died from the infection caused when their own clothes got pushed into a wound somewhere on their bodies than they did from bullets, they didn't have to be accurate, just hit them, but it wasn't considered "civil" or "honorable" to shoot someone and not be able to look them in the eyes.
Boxing rings are anywhere from 14x14 (Amateur and PAL Rings) to 25x25 (Pros) [Usually pro ring sizes are decided by the venue or as a part of the fight contract]. So between 196 and 625 square feet.
